David Otis
I was introduced to woodfiring back in 1978 at a workshop in Somerset, England. The shinos, tenmoku, and celadon glazes altered by ash activity from the firing completely captivated me. The surface of woodfired pottery were as varied and subtle as the canvases I had painted as a two-dimensional artist, helping me bridge the gap from painting into clay.
I have enjoyed this transition and feel fortunate to be able to wood-fire a portion of my functional pottery. I hope that my pots show my love to form and manipulate this wonderful material called "clay" into rather simple and useful objects, being always intrigued and excited by future form exploration and the next firing.
